The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to call the female of horses "faras."
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يسمي الأنثى من الخيل فرسا.
Abu Dawud (2546), Ibn Hibban (4680), and Hakim (2/144) narrated it through various routes from Marwan bin Muawiya, from Abu Hayan Taymi, who said, "Abu Zura related to us, from Abu Hurairah," and he mentioned it. This chain is sahih. Abu Hayan is Yahya bin Saeed bin Hayan Taymi. Hakim said, "A hadith that is sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs."
