Ibn Abu Shayba (15417), Darimi (2495), and Hakim (2/107–108) narrated it through two chains from Abu Umays, Utba bin Abdullah, from Iyas bin Salama bin Akwa, from his father, and he mentioned it. Darimi's wording is longer. Its chain is sahih. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of Muslim."Baghawi said, "If a night raid occurs and the Muslims become intermixed with the enemy, the leader should assign the Muslims a watchword that they say, by which they distinguish themselves from the enemy." Sharh al-Sunnah (11/52).As for what is narrated from Samura bin Jundab, who said, "The watchword of the Muhajirun was Abdullah, and the watchword of the Ansar was Abdul-Rahman," this is not sound. Abu Dawud (2595) and Bayhaqi (6/361) both narrated it through the route of Hajjaj bin Artah, from Qatada, from Hasan, from Samura bin Jundab, and he mentioned it. Its chain includes Hajjaj bin Artah, who was known to conceal his sources, and he narrated this using an ambiguous transmission formula. It has other chains that are weaker than this one.
