When the verse was revealed, "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you speak loudly to one another, lest your deeds become void while you do not perceive it" [Hujurat 49:2], Thabit bin Qays said, "By Allah, I am the one who used to raise his voice in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I fear that I am among the people of the Fire."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Rather, he is among the people of Paradise."The narrator said, "We used to see him walking among us as a man from the people of Paradise," or as he said.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (119:188) from Harim bin Abdul-Ala Asadi, who said, Mutamir bin Sulayman narrated to us, saying, I heard my father mention from Thabit, from Anas, and he related it.He also narrated it through two other routes, Jafar bin Sulayman and Sulayman bin Mughira, both from Thabit bin Qays, from Anas bin Malik, who said, "Thabit bin Qays was the orator of the Ansar. When this verse was revealed..." and he related something similar. These three narrations point to a flaw in what Muslim himself narrated through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Thabit Bunani, from Anas bin Malik, who said, "When this verse was revealed, "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Hujurat 49:2], to the end of the verse, Thabit bin Qays sat in his house and said, 'I am one of the people of Hell,' and he withheld himself from the Prophet ﷺ.So the Prophet ﷺ asked Saad bin Muaz, 'O Abu Amr, what is the matter with Thabit? Is he ill?' Saad said, 'He is my neighbor, and I know of no complaint from him.'"He said, So Saad went to him and told him what the Prophet ﷺ had said. Thabit said, "This verse was revealed, and you have known that I am among the loudest of you in raising my voice over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I am one of the people of Hell!" Saad mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Rather, he is one of the people of Paradise."Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir, "These three routes point to a flaw in the narration of Hammad bin Salama, in what he alone included regarding the mention of Saad bin Muaz. The correct view is that Saad bin Muaz was not present at the time this verse was revealed, for he had died a few days after Banu Qurayza, in the year five, whereas this verse was revealed concerning the delegation of Banu Tamim, and the delegations only came in succession in the year nine of the Hijrah."
