The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, along with Zubayr and Miqdad bin Aswad. He said, "Set out until you reach the meadow of Khakh. There you will find a woman traveling on a camel carrying a letter. Take it from her."So we set off, our horses galloping, until we arrived at the meadow. There we found the woman, and we said to her, "Hand over the letter."She replied, "I have no letter with me."We said, "Either you produce the letter or you strip off your clothes."So she took it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and there it was, from Hatib bin Abu Balta to certain polytheists in Mecca, informing them about some of the affairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hatib, what is this?"He said, "Messenger of Allah, do not be hasty with me. I was a man attached to Quraysh as an outsider, not one of them by blood. Those of the Emigrants who are with you have relatives in Mecca who protect their families and property there. Since I lacked any kinship to grant me such protection, I wanted to do them a favor so that they might protect my relatives. I did not do this out of disbelief or apostasy, nor out of approval of disbelief after embracing Islam."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has told you the truth."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, let me strike off the neck of this hypocrite!"He said, "He took part at Badr. How do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon those who were at Badr and said, 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"
Bukhari narrated it in "Jihad and Expeditions" (3007), and Muslim in "The Virtues of the Companions" (161:2494), both through Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Amr bin Dinar told us, Hasan bin Muhammad told me, Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi, who was Ali's scribe, told me, he said, I heard Ali say, and then he mentioned it.
