The Messenger of Allah would not launch a raid at the break of dawn. He would listen for the call to prayer. If he heard the adhan, he would hold back, and if not, he would attack.He once heard a man say, "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Upon the natural disposition."Then the man said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have come out of the Fire."They looked, and found him to be a goatherd.
كان رسول الله لا يغير إذا طلع الفجر، وكان يستمع الأذان، فإن سمع أذانا أمسك، وإلا أغار، فسمع رجلا يقول: الله أكبر الله أكبر، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: على الفطرة، ثم قال: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله فقال رسول الله ﷺ: خرجت من النار، فنظروا فإذا هو راعي معزى.
Muslim reported it in the Book of Prayer (382) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Yahya (meaning Ibn Saeed) narrated to us, from Hammad bin Salama, who said, Thabit narrated to us, from Anas, and he related it.On this topic there is also a report from Isam Muzani, who was a companion, who said, "Whenever the Messenger of Allah sent out an army or a raiding party, he would say to them, 'If you see a masjid, or hear a caller to prayer, do not kill anyone.'"Tirmidhi reported it (1549), and this is his wording, as did Abu Dawud (2635) and Ahmad (15714), through various routes from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Abdul-Malik bin Nawfal bin Masahiq, from Ibn Isam Muzani, from his father, who was a companion, and he related it.Tirmidhi said, This is a hasan gharib hadith.I say, in its chain is Ibn Isam Muzani, from whom no one narrated except Abdul-Malik bin Nawfal, and no one has affirmed his reliability. That is why the Hafiz said in Taqrib, His status is not known. As for Abdul-Malik bin Nawfal, more than one person narrated from him, and no one affirmed his reliability except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him among those he deemed reliable (7/107). That is why the Hafiz said, Acceptable, meaning when corroborated, and I have not found any corroboration for him.
