The Prophet ﷺ dispatched a military expedition and armed one of the men with a sword. When the man returned, he said, "If you had only seen how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reproached us. He said, 'Were you so incapable that, when I appointed a man among you and he failed to carry out my command, you did not replace him with someone who would carry out my command?'"
Abu Dawud (2627) and Ahmad (17007) reported it, and Ibn Hibban (4740) and Hakim (2/114-115) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Sulayman bin Mughira, who said, Humayd bin Hilal narrated to us, from Bishr bin Asim, from Uqba bin Malik, who was one of his kinsmen, he said, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Bishr bin Asim Laythi, for his hadith is hasan. A group of narrators reported from him, and Mizzi mentioned in his biography that Nasai graded him trustworthy, and Dhahabi followed him in that in Mizan.Ibn Hazm graded this hadith of his sahih in Muhalla (9/362). Hakim said, sahih according to the criterion of Muslim.I say, no one narrated from Bishr bin Asim except Abu Dawud and Nasai. His saying "I armed him" means "I gave him a weapon."
