I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever among you we appoint to a task and he conceals from us even a needle or anything beyond that, it is misappropriation for which he will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection."A dark-skinned man from the Ansar stood up. It is as if I can see him now. He said, "Messenger of Allah, take back your appointment from me."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with you?"The man replied, "I heard you say such and such."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I say it now as well. Whoever among you we appoint to a task must bring everything, little or much. Whatever he is given from it, he may take, and whatever he is forbidden, he must abstain from."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من استعملناه منكم على عمل، فكتمنا مخيطا فما فوقه كان غلولا يأتي به يوم القيامة. قال: فقام إليه رجل أسود من الأنصار كأني أنظر إليه فقال: يا رسول الله اقبل عني عملك قال: وما لك؟ قال: سمعتك تقول كذا وكذا، قال: وأنا أقوله الآن، من استعملناه منكم على عمل فليجيء بقليله وكثيره، فما أوتي منه أخذ، وما نهى عنه انتهي.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Leadership (1833), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Waki bin Jarra narrated to us, who said, Ismail bin Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Qays bin Abu Hazim, from Adi bin Umayra Kindi, who said, and he mentioned it.
