Someone said to Umar, "Will you not appoint a successor?"He replied, "If I appoint a successor, then one better than me has done so, namely Abu Bakr. And if I leave the matter, then one better than me has left it, namely the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The people praised him, so he said, "A man torn between hope and fear. I would love to come out of this matter even, with nothing for me and nothing against me. I will not bear its burden in life or in death."
قيل لعمر: ألا تستخلف؟ قال: إن استخلف فقد استخلف من هو خير مني أبو بكر، وإن أترك فقد ترك من هو خير مني رسول الله ﷺ، فأثنوا عليه فقال: راغب راهب، وددت أني نجوت منها كفافا لا لي ولا علي، لا أتحملها حيا ولا ميتا.
