We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we stopped at a place to camp. Some of us were fixing their tents, some were practicing archery, and some were tending to their grazing animals when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, "The prayer is gathering."We assembled before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "There has never been a prophet before me except that it was his duty to guide his community to the best of what he knew for them and to warn them against the worst of what he knew for them. As for this community of yours, its well-being has been placed in its earliest generation, while its later generations will be afflicted with trials and matters you will find detestable. A trial will come, and one part of it will make another seem light. A trial will come, and the believer will say, 'This will be my destruction,' then it will pass. Another trial will come, and the believer will say, 'This one, this one.' So whoever wishes to be removed from the Fire and admitted into Paradise, let his death come while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people the way he loves to be treated. Whoever pledges allegiance to a leader, giving him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him if he is able. If another comes to dispute his authority, then strike the neck of that other one."I drew near to him and said, "I implore you by Allah, did you yourself hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He pointed to his ears and his heart with his hands and said, "My two ears heard it and my heart preserved it."I said to him, "Your cousin Muawiya commands us to consume our wealth among ourselves wrongfully and to kill ourselves, while Allah says, 'You who believe, do not consume one another's wealth wrongfully, but only through trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is ever Merciful to you.' [Nisa 4:29]"He was silent for a while, then said, "Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Leadership (1844) through two routes from Jareer, from Amash, from Zayd bin Wahb, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Kaaba, who said, "I entered the masjid, and there was Abdullah bin Amr bin As sitting in the shade of the Kaaba, with people gathered around him. I went to them and sat with him." He said, then he mentioned the hadith. His saying, "jashar" - Abu Ubayd said, "The jashar are people who go out to pasture with their animals." Asmai said, "They spend the night there, and some might think this constitutes travel in which prayer is shortened, but that is not the case."And his saying, "This nation of yours has had its wellbeing placed in its beginning, and its end will be struck by trials and matters you will find objectionable" - the beginning of the nation refers to the era of the Prophet ﷺ and the era of the first three caliphs up until Uthman was killed. These years were a period of unity for this nation and the soundness of its affairs. But when Uthman was killed, turmoil surged like the waves of the sea, and came one after another like patches of a dark night. It has continued, and continues still, in succession up to this very day.The saying of Abdul-Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Kaaba, "This cousin of yours, Muawiya, commands us to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly and to kill one another," means that Abdul-Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Kaaba held this view of Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan because of his dispute with Ali
. The pledge of allegiance to Ali had already taken place, so he considered Muawiya's spending of money on his soldiers and followers in the war against Ali to be a form of consuming wealth unjustly. This Abdul-Rahman was not known to hold Shia sympathies, so this statement of his should be understood as his own inference, not as an explicit textual statement about consuming people's wealth unjustly. Some of the early scholars said, "When the lands become distant from one another, it becomes permissible for each region to have its own ruler, as is the case today."
