Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us to give him our pledge of allegiance at the base of the tree.Salama said, "I pledged allegiance to him first among the people. Then he continued taking pledges, and when he was in the middle of the crowd, he said, 'Pledge allegiance, Salama.'"I replied, "I have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah, at the very first."He said, "Do it again."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed that I was unarmed, with no weapon on me, so he gave me a shield. Then he kept taking pledges until he was at the end of the crowd, and he said, "Will you not pledge allegiance to me, Salama?"I replied, "I have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah, at the first of the people and in the middle of them."He said, "Do it again."So I pledged allegiance to him a third time.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Campaigns (1806:131) from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Hatim, meaning bin Ismail, narrated to us from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd, who said, I heard Salama bin Akwa say, and then he mentioned it.Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Rulings (7208) from Abu Asim, from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd, from Salama, in abridged form, and its wording is, he said, "We pledged allegiance to the Prophetﷺ under the tree, and he said to me, 'Salama, will you not pledge allegiance?' I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I already pledged allegiance the first time.' He said, 'And now a second time.'"
