The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not drink from a hollowed stump, nor from a vessel coated with pitch, nor from a gourd, nor from a green jar. Drink from a leather skin tied at its mouth. If the drink becomes strong, dilute it with water, and if it still defeats you, pour it out."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: لا تشربوا في نقير ولا مزفت ولا دباء، ولا حنتم، واشربوا في الجلد الموكا عليه، فإن اشتد فاكسروه بالماء، فإن أعياكم فأهريقوه.
Abu Dawud (3695) and Bayhaqi (8/302) both narrated it through the route of Awf bin Abu Jameela, from Abul-Qamus Zayd bin Ali, who said, "A man who had been among the delegation of Abdul-Qays that came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated to me" (Awf thought his name was Qays bin Numan), and he then mentioned the hadith.Its chain is hasan because of Abul-Qamus, for a group of narrators transmitted from him, Ajli declared him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. However, his statement "and if it becomes strong, dilute it with water" is shadhdh, since he was alone in narrating it. This is why Bayhaqi said following the hadith, "The established narrations concerning the story of the delegation of Abdul-Qays are free of this wording," meaning his statement, "and if it becomes strong, dilute it with water."
