I asked al-Aswad, "Did you ask Ayesha, Umm Muiminin, about the vessels in which it is disliked to make nabidh?"He replied, "Yes. I said, 'Umm Muiminin, tell me about the vessels in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade making nabidh.'"She said, "He forbade us, the people of the household, from making nabidh in the gourd and in vessels coated with pitch."I said to him, "Did you not mention al-hantam and al-jarr?"He replied, "I am only telling you what I heard. Should I tell you what I did not hear?"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Drinks (5595), and Muslim in the Book of Drinks (1995:35), both through the route of Jareer, from Mansur, from Ibrahim (that is, Nakhai), with this chain. In one wording of Muslim, through the route of Amash, from Ibrahim, with this chain, "that the Prophet ﷺ forbade the dubba and the muzaffat."His saying, "jarr" the jirar are the plural of jarra, which is a vessel made of pottery. His saying, "hantam", Nawawi said in his commentary on Muslim (1/185), "As for the hantam, there is disagreement about it, but the soundest and strongest of the opinions is that they are green jars. This explanation is established in the Book of Drinks of Sahih Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah, and it is the view of the companion Abdullah bin Mughafal , and it is held by the majority, or many, of the people of language, the rare expressions of hadith, the scholars of hadith, and the jurists. The second opinion is that they are all jars, which was said by Abdullah bin Umar, Saeed bin Jubayr, and Abu Salama..." He then mentioned the remaining six opinions.
