Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wine comes from these two trees, the date palm and the grapevine."
أن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: الخمر من هاتين الشجرتين: النخلة، والعنبة.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (1985:13), from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated to us, Hajjaj bin Abu Uthman informed us, Yahya bin Abu Kathir told me, that Abu Kathir told him, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Bayhaqi said, "This was expressed in the manner of emphasis, not restriction, just as one says, 'Satiety comes from meat,' and 'Warmth comes from fur,' without this denying satiety from anything other than meat, or denying warmth from anything other than fur. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the prohibition of all intoxicating drinks in sahih reports." See Minna Kubra (7/348).His saying, "the date palm and the grapevine," is evidence for the people of Kufa that wine comes from these two trees only, and that anything other than them is permissible so long as it does not cause intoxication.The majority of scholars held that everything called wine is prohibited, including fadikh, which is made from unripe dates, date wine, fresh ripe dates, raisins, barley, corn, honey, and other things, some of which will be mentioned later.
