My beloved friend advised me, "Do not drink wine, for it is the key to every evil."
أوصاني خليلي: لا تشرب الخمر، فإنها مفتاح كل شر.
Ibn Majah (3371) narrated it through the route of Rashid Abu Muhammad Hamani, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Umm Darda, from Abu Darda, who said, then he mentioned it.Bukhari narrated it in full in Adab al-Mufrad (18) through this same route, where he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed me with nine things..." then he mentioned all of them.Ibn Majah also narrated it in another place (4034), and Bazzar (4148) narrated it with this same chain, but only part of it. Bazzar said, We do not know of this hadith being narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with this wording except through this route with this chain. Rashid Abu Muhammad is from Basra and there is no harm in him, more than one person has narrated from him. Shahr bin Hawshab has been narrated from by many people, and they have discussed him critically, but they have accepted his hadith. So the chain is hasan because of the disagreement over Shahr, for his hadith is hasan as long as he does not contradict others, and the same applies to the one narrating from him. Hafiz has also graded its chain hasan in Amali Mutlaqa (p. 76).
