The prohibition of wine was revealed concerning two clans of the Ansar. They drank, and when they had drunk their fill, they began scuffling with one another. Once they sobered up, a man would notice a mark on his face, his head, or his beard, and he would say, "My brother did this to me." They were brothers with no rancor in their hearts, so he would add, "By Allah, had he been kind and merciful toward me, he would not have done this to me." And so rancor settled into their hearts.Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed, "Wine and gambling are nothing but..." up to His words, "So will you not then abstain?" [Maidah 5:90–91].Some people said, "It is filth, yet it is in the belly of so-and-so, who was killed at Badr, and so-and-so, who was killed at Uhud."So Allah revealed "There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, so long as they are mindful of Allah, and believe, and do righteous deeds" [Maidah 5:93].
نزل تحريم الخمر في قبيلتين من قبائل الأنصار شربوا حتى إذا نهلوا، عبث بعضهم ببعض، فلما صحوا جعل الرجل يرى الأثر بوجهه وبرأسه وبلحيته، فيقول: قد فعل بي هذا أخي وكانوا إخوة ليس في قلوبهم ضغائن، والله لو كان بي رؤوفا رحيما، ما فعل بي هذا، فوقعت في قلوبهم الضغائن، فأنزل الله عزوجل {إنما الخمر والميسر} إلى قوله {فهل أنتم منتهون} فقال ناس: هي رجس وهي في بطن فلان قتل يوم بدر، وفلان قتل يوم أحد، فأنزل الله عز وجل {ليس على الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت جناح فيما طعموا إذا ما اتقوا وءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت}
Nasai narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra (11151), as did Hakim (2/141–142), Tabarani in al-Kabir (12/56), and Diya in al-Mukhtarah (10/341), all of them through the route of Rabia bin Kulthum bin Jubayr, from his father, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Abdullah bin Abbas, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Rabia bin Kulthum and his father, for there is some minor criticism regarding both of them, though it is still hasan, and they are among the narrators of Muslim.Haythami said in al-Majma (187), "Tabarani narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of al-Sahih."Ibn Hajar graded it sahih in Fath al-Bari (10/31).Note, in the printed edition of Tabarani's work, the phrase "from his father" is missing from within the chain of transmission.
