There was a Jew in Medina who used to lend me money against my dates until harvest time. Jabir owned the land on the road to Ruma. One year the harvest failed, and the Jew came to me at harvest time, but I found nothing there for him. I kept asking him to grant me an extension until the following year, but he refused.The Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, so he said to his companions, "Let us go and request an extension for Jabir from the Jew."They came to me in my date grove, and the Prophet ﷺ began speaking to the Jew, but he kept saying, "Abu Qasim, I will not grant him an extension."When the Prophet ﷺ saw this, he stood up and walked around the grove, then came back to him and spoke to him again, but he refused. So I got up and brought a small amount of fresh dates and placed them before the Prophet ﷺ, and he ate.Then he asked, "Where is your shelter, Jabir?"I told him, and he said, "Spread something out for me inside it."I spread it out, and he entered and lay down to rest. Then he woke up, and I brought him another handful, which he ate from. Then he stood and spoke to the Jew again, but he still refused. He then walked among the fresh dates of the second grove and said, "Jabir, harvest and pay him off."He sat down at the harvest, and I picked enough to pay off my debt, with some left over. I went out until I came to the Prophet ﷺ and gave him the good news, and he said, "I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah."
كان بالمدينة يهودي، وكان يسلفني في تمري إلى الجذاذ، وكانت لجابر الأرض التي بطريق رومة، فجلست فخلا عاما، فجاءني اليهودي عند الجذاذ، ولم أجد منها شيئا، فجعلت أستنظره إلى قابل، فيأبى، فأخبر بذلك النبي ﷺ، فقال لأصحابه: امشوا نستنظر لجابر من اليهودي، فجاءوني في نخلي، فجعل النبي ﷺ يكلم اليهودي، فيقول: أبا القاسم لا أنظره، فلما رأى النبي ﷺ، قام فطاف في النخل، ثم جاءه فكلمه، فأبى، فقمت فجئت بقليل رطب، فوضعته بين يدي النبي ﷺ، فأكل، ثم قال: أين عريشك يا جابر؟ فأخبرته فقال: افرش لي فيه، ففرشته، فدخل فرقد، ثم استيقظ، فجئته بقبضة أخرى، فأكل منها، ثم قام فكلم اليهودي، فأبى عليه، فقام في الرطاب في النخل الثانية، ثم قال: يا جابر جد واقض، فوقف في الجذاذ، فجذذت منها ما قضيته، وفضل منه، فخرجت حتى جئت النبي ﷺ، فبشرته، فقال: أشهد أني رسول الله.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Foods (5442) from Saeed bin Abu Maryam, who said, "Abu Ghassan told us, Abu Hazim told me, from Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Abu Rabia, from Jabir bin Abdullah," and he related it.His saying, "until the jidhadh," with the jim vowelled as kasrah, though fatha is also permissible, and with the dhal pointed, though leaving it unpointed is also permissible, means the time of cutting the fruit of the palm trees, which is the harvest.His saying, "istanzarahu" means he asked him for a delay.His saying, "your arsh" refers to the structure set up in a garden to provide shade.
