One day the Prophet ﷺ distributed dates among his companions, giving each person seven dates. He gave me seven dates as well, one of which was dry and shriveled. Yet none of them pleased me more than that one, for it held up the longest under my chewing.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Foods (5411) from Abu Numan, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Abbas Jariri, from Abu Uthman Nahdi, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it.His saying, "a shriveled date," hashaf refers to inferior dates, which are dates that dry out on the palm tree before their ripeness is complete.
