The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no person who kills a sparrow or anything larger than it without just cause except that Allah will question him about it."Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, what is its just cause?"He replied, "That he slaughter it and eat it, and not cut off its head and toss it away."
Nasai (4349, 4445) and Hakim (4/233) narrated it via Ibn Uyayna, from Amr bin Dinar, from Suhayb the freedman of Ibn Amir, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he related it. Ahmad (6550) narrated it via Shuba, from Amr bin Dinar, in abridged form. Hakim said, "sahih in isnad." Both of them said this, but in its isnad is Suhayb the freedman of Ibn Amir, Abu Musa the Makkan, from whom only Amr bin Dinar transmitted, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban. That is why the Hafiz said, "acceptable," meaning when corroborated, and I have not found anyone who corroborated him. However, the hadith of Shareed supports it. He said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever kills a sparrow wantonly, it will cry out to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection, saying, 'My Lord, so-and-so killed me wantonly and did not kill me for any benefit.'"Ahmad (192470) narrated it from Abdul-Wahid the Haddad, Abu Ubayda, from Khalaf bin Mihran, our teacher Amir the Ahwal told us, from Salih bin Dinar, from Amr bin Shareed, who said, I heard Shareed say, and he related it. Nasai (4446) and Ibn Hibban (5894) narrated it via the route of Imam Ahmad. In its isnad is Salih bin Dinar, from whom only Amir the Ahwal transmitted, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban. That is why the Hafiz said, "acceptable," meaning when corroborated, and I have not found anyone who corroborated him. However, each of the two hadiths strengthens the other, so the hadith becomes hasan.
