A bridegroom in Medina invited us to a meal and brought out thirteen lizards for us. Some of us ate, others abstained. The next day I met Ibn Abbas and told him about it. People gathered around him in great numbers, until one of them said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I will not eat it, nor will I forbid it, nor will I declare it unlawful.'"Ibn Abbas replied, "What a poor thing you have said. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ was sent only to make things lawful and unlawful. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was once at the home of Maymunah, and with him were Fadl bin Abbas, Khalid bin Walid, and another woman, when a tray with meat on it was brought to them. As the Prophet ﷺ was about to eat, Maymunah said to him, 'It is the meat of a lizard.' He withdrew his hand and said, 'This is meat I have never eaten before.' Then he said to them, 'Eat.' So Fadl, Khalid bin Walid, and the woman ate from it.Maymunah said, 'I will not eat anything unless the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eats from it.'"
دعانا عروس بالمدينة، فقرب إلينا ثلاثة عشر ضبا، فأكل وتارك، فلقيت ابن عباس من الغد، فأخبرته، فأكثر القوم حوله، حتى قال بعضهم: قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا آكله، ولا أنهى عنه، ولا أحرمه. فقال ابن عباس: بئس ما قلتم، ما بعث نبي الله ﷺ إلا محلا ومحرما، إن رسول الله ﷺ بينما هو عند ميمونة، وعنده الفضل بن عباس، وخالد بن الوليد، وامرأة أخرى، إذ قرب إليهم خوان عليه لحم، فلما أراد النبي ﷺ أن يأكل، قالت له ميمونة: إنه لحم ضب، فكف يده، وقال: هذا لحم لم أكله قط، وقال لهم: كلوا، فأكل منه الفضل، وخالد بن الوليد، والمرأة وقالت ميمونة: لا أكل من شيء إلا شيء يأكل منه رم منه رسول الله ﷺ.
