Jabir reported, "On the day of Khaybar we slaughtered horses, mules, and donkeys. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from eating mules and donkeys, but he did not forbid us from eating horses."
ذبحنا يوم خيبر الخيل والبغال والحمير، فنهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن البغال والحمير، ولم ينهنا عن الخيل.
Reported by Abu Dawud (3789), and Ahmad (14840), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5272), and Hakim (2354), all of them through chains of transmission from Hammad bin Salama, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, as mentioned. Hakim added to its chain, "from Abu Zubayr and Amr bin Dinar." And he said, "This is a hadith sahih according to the criterion of Muslim, though the two of them did not report it."There is room for consideration in what he said. Yes, the two of them did not report it in this wording, but they did report it, as mentioned previously, through the route of Amr bin Dinar, from Muhammad bin Ali, from Jabir. And Muslim reported it through the route of Ibn Jurayj, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir. In both of these routes there is the prohibition of donkey meat and the permission of horse meat, but neither of them mentions "the meat of mules."It has become clear from the narration in the Sahihayn that Amr bin Dinar, as in Hakim's route, did not hear it directly from Jabir, but rather there was an intermediary between them.
