I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "We are a people who hunt with these dogs."He replied, "When you send your trained dogs and you mention the name of Allah, eat from what they catch for you, even if they kill it, unless the dog eats from it. In that case, I fear it only caught it for itself. And if other dogs that are not yours mix with them, do not eat it."
سألت رسول الله ﷺ قلت: إنا قوم نصيد بهذه الكلاب قال: إذا أرسلت كلابك المعلمة، وذكرت اسم الله، فكل مما أمسكن عليكم، وإن قتلن إلا أن يأكل الكلب، فإني أخاف أن يكون إنما أمسكه على نفسه، وإن خالطها كلاب من غيرها فلا تأكل.
Reported by Bukhari in Slaughtered Animals and Hunting (5483), and Muslim in Hunting and Slaughtered Animals (1929:2), both through the route of Muhammad bin Fudayl, from Bayan, from Shaybi, from Adi bin Hatim, as mentioned.Nawawi said, "This is explicit in prohibiting the eating of what the trained animal has eaten from, and this is the view held by the majority of scholars, among them Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Ata, Saeed bin Jubayr, Hasan, Shaybi, Nakhai, Ikrima, Qatada, Abu Hanifa and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, Ibn Munzir, and Dawud... They argued using His statement, "So eat from what they catch for you" [Maidah 5:4], and this is something that it did not catch for us, but rather for itself." End of quote. Sharh Muslim (13/75).
