A man from the Ansar reported that some people in Medina heard a loud commotion on the day of Adha and assumed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already performed the prayer, so they slaughtered their sacrifices. They sent a man to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who found him having laid his sacrificial animal on its side, about to slaughter it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Help me with my sacrifice."So the man assisted him, then said, "Messenger of Allah, some people thought you had already prayed and slaughtered their sacrifices. What is your view on that?"He replied, "Let them buy other animals and slaughter them in their place."
Harith bin Abu Usama narrated it (403 - Bughyat Bahith) from Yunus bin Muhammad Muaddib, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abu Khayr, with the same wording, and he related it. Its chain is sahih. Layth is Ibn Saad, and Abu Khayr is Marthad bin Abdullah Muzani.Bayhaqi also narrated it, via Harith's route, in Marifah (7147) with the same wording, without his statement, "so they found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had laid his sacrificial animal down" up to his statement, "so he helped him."Ahmad narrated it (23168) from Hashim, that is, Ibn Qasim Laythi, from Layth, with the same chain, in abbreviated form.
