Someone said to Ibn Abbas, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hastened between Safa and Marwa, and that this is a sunnah."Ibn Abbas replied, "They are right. When Ibrahim was commanded to perform the rites, Satan confronted him at the place of hastening, and Ibrahim raced him and outran him.Then Jibreel took him to the pillar at Uqba, and Satan confronted him there, so he pelted him with seven pebbles until he departed. Then Satan confronted him at the middle pillar, and he pelted him with seven pebbles.Then he laid him down on his forehead, and Ismail was wearing a white shirt. Ismail said to him, 'Father, I have no garment other than this in which you may shroud me, so take it off and shroud me in it.' Ibrahim set about removing it, and then he was called from behind him, 'You have already fulfilled the vision' [Saffat 37:105]. Ibrahim turned around, and there was a white ram, horned and large-eyed."Ibn Abbas added, "We used to seek out that particular breed of ram."
قلت لابن عباس يزعم قومك أن رسول الله ﷺ سعى بين الصفا والمروة وأن ذلك سنة؟ قال: صدقوا إن إبراهيم لما أمر بالمناسك عرض له الشيطان عند المسعى فسابقه فسبقه إبراهيم، ثم ذهب به جبريل إلى جمرة العقبة فعرض له الشيطان فرماه بسبع حصيات حتى ذهب، ثم عرض له عند الجمرة الوسطى فرماه بسبع حصيات، وثم تله للجبين، وعلى إسماعيل قميص أبيض، فقال له: يا أبت إنه ليس لي ثوب تكفنني فيه غيره، فاخلعه حتى تكفنني فيه، فعالجه ليخلعه فنودي من خلفه {قد صدقت الرؤيا} [سورة الصافات: ١٠٥] فالتفت إبراهيم فإذا هو بكبش أبيض أقرن أعين. قال ابن عباس: لقد رأيتنا نتبع ذلك الضرب من الكباش.
This is part of a long hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad (2707) and Abu Dawud Tayalisi (2820) through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Abu Asim Ghanawi, from Abu Tufayl, as mentioned. It has already been given in full in the book on Hajj.As for what has been narrated from Abu Hurairah as a marfu report, "Choose the finest of your sacrificial animals, for they are your mounts on the Path," this is extremely daif.Rafii narrated it in Tadwin fi Akhbar Qazwin (3/219) through the route of Abdullah bin Mubarak, who said, "Yahya bin Ubaydullah narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Hurairah," who said, and then mentioned it.This Yahya bin Ubaydullah is Ibn Abdullah bin Mawhab, Taymi, Madani, who is extremely daif according to the majority. Imam Ahmad said, "His hadith is rejected." Nasai said, "He is discarded." Ibn Hibban said, "He narrates from his father things that have no basis." I say, this is one of his narrations from his father.It has also been narrated with the wording, "Honor your sacrificial animals, for they are your mounts on the Path."
