The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring made of gold which he used to wear, placing its stone on the inner side of his palm. The people then made similar rings for themselves. Later, he sat on the pulpit, removed it, and said, "I used to wear this ring and place its stone on the inside." He then threw it away and said, "By Allah, I will never wear it again." So the people discarded their rings as well.
أن رسول الله ﷺ اصطنع خاتما من ذهب وكان يلبسه، فيجعل فصه في باطن كفه، فصنع الناس، ثم إنه جلس على المنبر فنزعه، فقال: إني كنت ألبس هذا الخاتم وأجعل فصه من داخل فرمى به ثم قال: والله لا ألبسه أبدا، فنبذ الناس خواتيمهم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Oaths and Vows (6651), and Muslim (2091:53), both of them from Qutayba, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned it.
