I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Do not administer more than ten lashes except in a punishment prescribed by Allah."In another wording, "No one is to be given more than ten lashes except in a punishment prescribed by Allah."
سمعت النبي ﷺ يقول: لا تجلدوا فوق عشرة أسواط إلا في حد من حدود الله. وفي لفظ: لا يجلد فوق عشرة جلدات إلا في حد من حدود الله
Bukhari narrated it in the Hudud chapter (6850), and Muslim in the Hudud chapter (1708), both through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Amr told me, that Bukayr bin Ashaj told him, saying, "While I was sitting with Sulayman bin Yasar, Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir came and spoke to Sulayman bin Yasar. Then Sulayman bin Yasar turned to us and said, 'Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir told me that his father had told him, that he heard Abu Burda al-Ansari say,'" and he mentioned it. The wording is Bukhari's.Abu Dawud said, "Abu Burda's name was Hani."I say, it has also been said that his name was Harith bin Amr, and other names have been given as well. He is Abu Burda bin Niyar al-Balawi, an ally of the Ansar and a companion.
