The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah has cursed the thief who steals an egg and has his hand cut off, and who steals a rope and has his hand cut off."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: لعن الله السارق يسرق البيضة فتقطع يده، ويسرق الحبل فتقطع يده.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hudud (6783) and Muslim in the Book of Hudud (1687), both through the route of Amash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned. Bukhari added, Amash said, "They used to think it meant iron helmets, and as for the rope, they used to think it meant items among them worth a few dirhams." Amash's statement, "iron helmets," refers to what is placed on the head during war. Some scholars took this hadith at face value, while others gave it a figurative interpretation.
