The Quraysh were greatly troubled by the case of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen something. They said, "Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her? Who would dare approach him except Usama, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"So Usama spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on her behalf. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Are you interceding concerning one of the prescribed punishments of Allah?"Then he stood and delivered a sermon, saying, "People, those before you were destroyed because when a noble person among them stole, they let him go, but when a weak person stole, they carried out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, Muhammad would cut off her hand."
Bukhari narrated it in the Hudud (6788) and Muslim in the Hudud (8:1688), both of them via Layth, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and she mentioned it.Ibn Abu Hamza and the nephew of Zuhri narrated it, from Zuhri, from Qasim, from Ayesha, that that woman whose hand had been cut off repented, and she used to come to me, so I would raise her need to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Daraqutni said in Ilal (14/118), "That is sahih from Zuhri, from Qasim, from Ayesha."
