The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that a man and a woman from among them had committed adultery.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, "What do you find in the Torah concerning stoning?"They replied, "We expose them publicly and they are flogged."Abdullah bin Salam said, "You are lying. The Torah does contain the ruling of stoning. Bring the Torah."So they brought it and spread it open. One of them placed his hand over the verse of stoning and read what came before it and what came after it.Abdullah bin Salam said, "Lift your hand."He lifted his hand, and there was the verse of stoning.They said, "He has spoken the truth, Muhammad. The verse of stoning is in it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that the two be stoned, and they were stoned.Abdullah bin Umar said, "I saw the man leaning over the woman, shielding her from the stones."
جاءت اليهود إلى رسول الله ﷺ فذكروا له أن رجلا منهم وامرأة زنيا، فقال لهم رسول الله ﷺ: ما تجدون في التوراة في شان الرجم؟ فقالوا: نفضحهم ويجلدون. فقال عبد الله بن سلام: كذبتم، إن فيها الرجم فأتوا بالتوراة فنثروها، فوضع أحدهم يده على آية الرجم، ثم قرأ ما قبلها وما بعدها، فقال عبد الله بن سلام: ارفع يدك فرفع يده، فإذا فيها آية الرجم. فقالوا: صدق يا محمد فيها آية الرجم، فأمر بهما رسول الله ﷺ فرجما. فقال عبد الله بن عمر: فرأيت الرجل يحني على المرأة، يقيها الحجارة.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments (1) from Nafi, from Abdullah bin Umar, as mentioned. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments (6841) through the route of Malik, with the same wording. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments (169926) through the route of Ubaydullah, from Nafi, with similar wording. He also narrated it through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, "Several scholars, among them Malik bin Anas, informed me that Nafi told them, from Ibn Umar," as mentioned, in a shortened form.Bukhari (7543) and Muslim (169927), the two shaykhs, both narrated it from the hadith of Ismail bin Ulaya, from Ayub, from Nafi, and in it, they said, "We shall blacken their faces and disgrace them." He said, "Say, 'Then bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful.'" [Al Imran 3:93]So they came, and they said to a man among them whom they trusted, "O one-eyed man, read." So he read until he reached a certain place in it, and he put his hand over it. He said, "Lift your hand." So he lifted his hand, and there appeared the verse of stoning, plainly visible. He said, "O Muhammad, stoning is indeed due upon them, but we have been concealing it among ourselves." So he ordered that the two of them be stoned, and I saw him leaning over her to shield her from the stones. This is the wording of Bukhari. As for Muslim, he did not give the exact wording.Imam Ahmad (4498) narrated it from Ismail bin Ulaya, and in it, they brought a one-eyed reciter of theirs called Ibn Suriya.His saying "yujaniu" with a jim and a hamza at the end means he leaned over her to shield her. His saying "we shall blacken their faces" comes from tasheem, meaning to blacken. His saying "we shall disgrace them" comes from disgrace, meaning that the two of them would be mounted backward on a donkey and paraded through the marketplaces. And the ruling of stoning the adulterer and adulteress still exists in the Book of Leviticus, chapter 20.
