The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave gifts to a group of men while Saad was sitting with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left out one man, who was the one I admired most among them.I said, "Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with you regarding so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer."He replied, "Or a Muslim."I remained silent for a while, but then what I knew of the man overcame me, so I returned to my words and said, "What is the matter with you regarding so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer."He replied, "Or a Muslim."Then what I knew of the man overcame me again, so I repeated my words, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated his. Then he said, "Saad, I sometimes give to a man while another, whom I love more than him, receives nothing, out of fear that Allah may cast him face-down into the Fire."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Faith (27), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (150), both from the hadith of Zuhri, from Amir bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas, from Saad, who related the same. Zuhri said, "We hold that Islam is the word, and faith is the deed." Ibn Hibban mentioned this in his Sahih (163).When Islam is used in its true, legal sense, it is synonymous with faith, as Allah says, "Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam" [Al Imran 3:19], and as He says, "Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him" [Al Imran 3:85]. But when it is used in its linguistic sense, it is synonymous with submission and surrender, meaning out of fear of the sword, as Allah says, "Say, You have not believed, but say instead, We have submitted" [Surah Hujurat 49:14].This contains a refutation of the extremist Murjiites in their claim that mere utterance of the tongue suffices for faith. It also shows that one should refrain from decisively affirming complete faith for someone about whom no explicit text has been given, though this does not straightforwardly rule out affirming that such a person will enter Paradise. For more on this, see Fath al-Bari (1/79).On this subject there is also what has been related from Anas bin Malik, who said, the Messenger of Allah used to say, "Islam is outward, and faith is in the heart." He said, then he would point to his chest three times. He said, then he would say, "Piety is here, piety is here."This was related by Imam Ahmad (12381), Abu Yaala (2923), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (20), all of them by the route of Ali bin Masada, who said, Qatada narrated to us, from Anas, who related the same. Bazzar said, "Ali bin Masada alone related it."Haythami said in Majma (1/52), "Ahmad and Abu Yaala related it in full, and Bazzar related it in abridged form, and its narrators are the narrators of the sahih works, except for Ali bin Masada, whom Ibn Hibban, Abu Dawud Tayalisi, Abu Hatim, and Ibn Main deemed reliable, while others deemed him daif."I say, Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Aqeeli, Ibn Adi, and others deemed him daif. I did not find him in the printed edition of Thiqat by Ibn Hibban, nor did Ibn Hajar attribute this to him in Tahdheeb. Rather, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Majruhin (684) and said, "He was among those who erred despite the scarcity of his narrations, and he would relate things alone that were not corroborated by others, so he deserves to have his reports set aside when they conflict with what the reliable narrators report." He then cited the hadith mentioned above.Perhaps Hafiz Haythami, may Allah have mercy on him, confused one man with another. The conclusion is that this narration is daif.As for the statement "Piety is here," it is established in another hadith related by Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah said, "Do not envy one another, do not outbid one another falsely, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and let none of you undercut another's sale. Be servants of Allah, brothers to one another. The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He does not wrong him, nor abandon him, nor hold him in contempt. Piety is here," pointing to his chest three times. He then went on to mention the rest of the hadith. This was related by Muslim in the Book of Righteousness and Kinship Ties (2564), and it will be given in full in its proper place.
