Abdul-Rahman bin Abza instructed me, saying, "Ask Ibn Abbas about these two verses and how they fit together, "and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden" [Anam 6:151, Isra 17:33] and "whoever kills a believer deliberately" [Nisa 4:93]."So I asked Ibn Abbas, and he said, "When the verse in Furqan was revealed, namely the words of Allah Most High, "And those who do not call upon another god alongside Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, nor commit fornication. Whoever does that will meet with punishment" [Furqan 25:68], the idolaters of Makkah said, 'But we have killed the soul which Allah forbade, and we have called upon another god alongside Allah, and we have committed grave sins.'So Allah Most High revealed, "Except for the one who repents, believes, and does righteous deeds. For such people Allah will exchange their evil deeds for good ones, and Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful" [Furqan 25:70]. This verse applies to them.As for the verse in Nisa [4:93], that concerns a man who has come to know Islam and its laws and then kills. His recompense is Hell."I mentioned this to Mujahid, and he said, "Unless he feels remorse."
