Rafi reported, "I set out with my masters intending to make the Hijrah, and when we drew near to Madinah, they entered the city and left me behind to guard their belongings. Severe hunger overtook me, and some people leaving Madinah passed by me and said, 'If you went into the city, you could get some fruit from its orchards.' So I entered an orchard and cut down two clusters of dates. The owner of the orchard came upon me and brought me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what I had done. I was wearing two garments, and he asked me, 'Which of the two is better?' I pointed out one of them to him, so he said, 'Take this one,' and he gave the other to the owner of the orchard, then let me go."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (21942) from Rubai bin Ibrahim, who said, Abdul-Rahman, meaning Ibn Ishaq, narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from his uncle and Abu Bakr bin Zayd bin Muhajir, that the two of them heard Umayr, the freed slave of Aabi al-Lahm, say... then he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Harith al-Madani, for his hadith is hasan. This is strengthened by what Imam Ahmad also narrated (24009/83), in the Mustadrak to Musnad Ansar, from Hasan bin Musa, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, Muhammad bin Zayd bin Muhajir bin Qunfudh narrated to us, from Umayr, the freed slave of Aabi al-Lahm, who said... then he related it. There is well-known discussion regarding Ibn Lahia.
