The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. Then there will come a people whose testimony precedes their oath and whose oath precedes their testimony."Ibrahim said, "They used to strike us for giving testimony or making a covenant."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Testimonies (2652) and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (21:2533), via the route of Mansur, from Ibrahim bin Yazid, from Ubayda Salmani, from Abdullah (that is, Ibn Masud), and he mentioned it as above. As for what is narrated from Jabir bin Samura, who said, Umar bin Khattab addressed us at Jabiya and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us just as I am standing among you now, and said, 'Take care of me through my companions, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then falsehood will spread widely, until a man will bear witness without being asked to testify, and will swear an oath without being asked to swear.'" This report is confused. It was related by Ibn Majah (2363), Ahmad (177), and Ibn Hibban (5586), all of them via the route of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Jabir bin Samura, and he related it at greater length than this.On the surface it appears sound, since its narrators are trustworthy, but it contains an inconsistency stemming from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, for a number of trustworthy narrators related it from him in various different ways, which Daraqutni detailed in his Ilal (2/122-125).Among them are Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, Jareer bin Hazim, Muhammad bin Shabib Zahrani, and Qurra bin Khalid, and it is also said on the authority of Shuba bin Hajjaj, all of whom said, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr with his chain.A group of trustworthy narrators differed from them, among them Abdullah bin Mukhtar, Yunus bin Abu Ishaq and his son Israil, Mamar, Abdul-Hakeem bin Mansur, Habban and Mindal the two sons of Ali, Sufyan Thawri, and it is also said, from Shuba and Masudi, Dawud bin Zubarqan, Husayn bin Waqid, and Husayn bin Waqid, a teacher from whom Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated, and Qazaa bin Suwayd, and Abu Awana. They related it from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Abdullah bin Zubayr, from Umar.Shayban bin Abdul-Rahman, Shuayb bin Safwan, Zaida, and Ubaydullah bin Amr related it from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from a man who was not named, from Abdullah bin Zubayr.Abdul-Hameed bin Musa said, from Ubaydullah bin Amr, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Mujahid, from Ibn Zubayr, from Umar, but this did not amount to anything. Daraqutni mentioned others besides these, then said, "It appears that the inconsistency in this chain comes from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, due to the great divergence among the trustworthy narrators who related from him within the chain."
