Urwa bin Zubayr reported that Abu Huzaifa bin Utba bin Rabia, one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had been present at Badr, adopted Salim, the one known as Salim the freedman of Abu Huzaifa, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had adopted Zayd bin Haritha. Abu Huzaifa, believing Salim to be his son, married him to his niece Fatimah bint Walid bin Utba bin Rabia, who at that time was among the earliest women emigrants and one of the most excellent unmarried women of Quraysh. Then Allah revealed in His Book, "Call them by the names of their fathers. That is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and those under your care" [Ahzab 33:5]. So each of these adopted men was traced back to his own father, and if his father was unknown, he was traced back to the one who had freed him.Sahla bint Suhayl, the wife of Abu Huzaifa, who was from Banu Amir bin Luayy, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, we used to regard Salim as a son. He would come in upon me while I was lightly dressed, and we have only one house. What do you think about his situation?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Nurse him five times, and he will become unlawful to marry through her milk." So she came to regard him as a son through nursing.Ayesha, Umm Muiminin, adopted this practice with any man she wished to have admitted to her presence. She would instruct her sister Umm Kulthum Bint Abu Bakr Siddiq and her nieces to nurse any man she wished to be able to come in upon her.But the rest of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ refused to allow anyone to come in upon them on the basis of such nursing, and they said, "No. We consider what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to be nothing but a concession granted by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the case of nursing Salim alone. By Allah, no one will come in upon us on the basis of this kind of nursing."This was the position of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding the nursing of an adult, that it was specific to Salim.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on breastfeeding (12) from Ibn Shihab, that he was asked about the breastfeeding of an adult, and he said, "Urwa bin Zubayr informed me," and he narrated it. This is how Yahya narrated it from Malik, as a mursal report. Abdul-Razzaq (13886) narrated it as a connected report from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, from Ayesha, that Abu Huzaifa bin Utbah bin Rabia, who had been present at Badr, and he mentioned the story. Uthman bin Umar likewise narrated it from Malik as a connected report mentioning Ayesha. Ibn Abdul-Barr mentioned it in Tamhid (25/8), and its chain is sahih. As for the statement of Sahlah bint Suhayl, "He would come in to see me while I was not properly dressed," Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "The meaning of the hadith, in my view, is that he would come in to see her while some parts of her were uncovered, such as her hair, hand, and face." He also said, regarding the manner of breastfeeding an adult, that it means milk is expressed for him and he is given it to drink. He said, "As for the woman placing her breast in his mouth as is done with an infant, that is not permissible, for that is not lawful according to the majority of the scholars." End of quote.
