Abu Amr bin Hafs divorced her irrevocably while he was away in Syria. He sent his agent to her with some barley, but she was displeased with it. The agent said, "By Allah, you are entitled to nothing from us."So she went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him. He said, "You are not entitled to any maintenance from him." He instructed her to observe her waiting period at the house of Umm Sharik, then said, "That is a woman whom my companions visit frequently. Observe your waiting period at the house of Abdullah bin Umm Maktum, for he is a blind man, and you can remove your outer garments in his presence. When your waiting period is complete, inform me."She said, "When my waiting period was complete, I told him that Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan and Abu Jahm bin Hisham had proposed to me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Abu Jahm, he never sets his stick down from his shoulder. As for Muawiya, he is a destitute man with no wealth. Marry Usama bin Zayd."She said, "I disliked the idea." Then he said again, "Marry Usama bin Zayd." So I married him, and Allah placed much good in that, and I came to be envied for the marriage.
أن أبا عمرو بن حفص طلقها البتة- وهو غائب بالشام- فأرسل إليها وكيله بشعير، فسخطته. فقال: والله مالك علينا من شيء، فجاءت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له. فقال: ليس لك عليه نفقة وأمرها أن تعتد في بيت أم شريك، ثم قال: تلك امرأة يغشاها أصحابي، اعتدي عند عبد الله بن أم مكتوم، فإنه رجل أعمى، تضعين ثيابك عنده، فإذا حللت فآذنيني قالت: فلما حللت ذكرت له أن معاوية بن أبي سفيان، وأبا جهم بن هشام خطباني. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أما أبو جهم فلا يضع عصاه عن عاتقه، وأما معاوية فصعلوك لا مال له، انكحي أسامة بن زيد قالت: فكرهته، ثم قال: انكحي أسامة بن زيد فنكحته، فجعل الله في ذلك خيرا واغتبطت به.
Malik narrated it in "Divorce" (67) from Abdullah bin Yazid, the freedman of Aswad bin Sufyan, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, from Fatimah bint Qays, and he related it as mentioned.Muslim narrated it in "Divorce" (36:1480) through the route of Malik, with the same wording, similarly. Muslim also narrated it (37) through another route from Abu Salama, with the same chain, in abridged form, containing his ﷺ words, "There is no maintenance for you and no lodging."He also narrated it (38) through another route from Abu Salama, with the same chain, similar to the hadith of Malik. In it, it states, "She has no maintenance, but the waiting period is obligatory upon her." His ﷺ statement about Abu Jahm, "He never puts his staff down from his shoulder," is a figurative expression referring to his harshness toward women and his beating them, as is stated explicitly in some other narrations.
