When the news of Abu Sufyan's death arrived from Syria, Umm Habibah called for some yellow perfume on the third day and rubbed it on her cheeks and forearms, saying, "I had no need of this, but I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased person more than three days, except for a husband, for whom she mourns four months and ten days.'"
لما جاء نعي أبي سفيان من الشام دعت أم حبيبة بصفرة في اليوم الثالث، فمسحت عارضيها وذراعيها وقالت: إني كنت عن هذا لغنية، لولا أني سمعت النبي ﷺ يقول: لا يحل لامرأة تؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن تحد على ميت فوق ثلاث، إلا على زوج فإنها تحد عليه أربعة أشهر وعشرا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1280), and Muslim in the Book of Divorce (1486), both from the hadith of Sufyan, who said, Ayub bin Musa narrated to us, he said, Humayd bin Nafi informed me, from Zaynab the daughter of Abu Salama, and she mentioned something similar, and their wording is the same.
