Khawla bint Thalaba reported,

Khawla said, "By Allah, it was concerning me and concerning Aws bin Samit that Allah عز وجل revealed the opening of Surah al-Mujadilah. I was married to him, and he was a very old man whose temper had soured and who had grown irritable. One day he came in to me, and I answered him back about something. He became angry and said, 'You are to me as the back of my mother.'Then he went out and sat in the gathering of his people for a while. Afterward he came back in to me, and behold, he wanted to have relations with me."She said, "I told him, 'Certainly not. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Khuwayla, you shall not have your way with me after you have said what you have said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with their ruling.' He sprang at me, and I resisted him, overcoming him in the way a woman overcomes a weak old man, and I threw him off me.Then I went out to one of my neighbors, borrowed some clothes from her, and went on until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I sat before him and told him what I had suffered from my husband, and I began to complain to him ﷺ about the bad temper I had to endure."She continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, 'Khuwayla, your cousin is an old man, so fear Allah regarding him.'By Allah, I did not leave until Quran was revealed concerning me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was overcome by what used to overcome him at revelation, then it passed from him, and he said to me, 'Khuwayla, Allah has revealed concerning you and your husband.' Then he recited to me, 'Allah has indeed heard the words of the woman who pleads with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah, and Allah hears the dialogue between you. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing' up to His words 'and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment' [Mujadilah 58:1–4].The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Tell him to free a slave.'"She said, "I replied, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he has nothing with which to free a slave.'He said, 'Then let him fast two consecutive months.'I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he is an old man with no capacity for fasting.'He said, 'Then let him feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates.'I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he does not have that either.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We will help him with a basket of dates.'I said, 'And I, Messenger of Allah, will help him with another basket.'He said, 'You have done right and done well. Go and give it in charity on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin.'So I did."Abdullah said, my father said, Saad said, "The araq is the basket."
