A man invited Ali bin Abu Talib as his guest and prepared food for him. Fatimah said, "What if we invited the Prophet ﷺ to come and eat with us?"So they invited him, and he came. He placed his hand on the two doorposts, but when he saw a decorated curtain in a corner of the house, he turned back.Fatimah said to Ali, "Go after him and ask him, 'What made you turn back, Messenger of Allah?'"He replied, "It is not for me to enter a house adorned with decorations."
أن رجلا أضاف علي بن أبي طالب، فصنع له طعاما. فقالت فاطمة: لو دعونا النبي ﷺ فأكل معنا. فدعوه فجاء، فوضع يده على عضادتي الباب، فرأي قراما في ناحية البيت فرجع فقالت فاطمة لعلي: الحق فقل له: ما رجعك؟ يا رسول الله! قال: إنه ليس لي أن أدخل بيتا مزوقا.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (3755) and Ibn Majah (3360), and Ibn Hibban (6345) and Hakim (2/186) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, who said, Saeed bin Jumhan narrated to us, who said, Safinah narrated to us, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Saeed bin Jumhan, for there is disagreement about him, though he is hasan al-hadith.Qiram means a thin curtain, and muzawwaq means adorned with decoration.
