Juwayria bint Harith came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his help with her writ of manumission. By Allah, the moment she stood at the door of the chamber and I saw her, I disliked her being there, for I knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would see in her what I had seen.Juwayria said, "Messenger of Allah, the matter is as you know. I have made an agreement to buy my freedom, and I have come to ask your help with it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Would you like something better than that?"She asked, "What is it?"He said, "I will marry you and pay off your writ of manumission for you."She said, "Yes."He said, "It is done."The Muslims heard the news and said, "These are the in-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So they released the captives of Banu al-Mustaliq whom they held. By his marriage to her, a hundred households of Banu al-Mustaliq were freed. I do not know of any woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she was.
This was narrated by Abu Dawud (3931), Ahmad (26365), Ibn Hibban (4054), and Hakim (4/26), all from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, "Muhammad bin Jafar bin Zubayr told me, from Urwa, from Ayesha," and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, since he explicitly stated that he heard it directly.Juwayria bint Harith bin Mustaliq fell to the lot of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, or a cousin of his, so she offered to ransom herself. She was a woman of malaha, one who caught the eye. Malaha and maliha mean sweet and beautiful. When the Prophet ﷺ raided Banu Mustaliq in the Battle of Muraysi in the year five, or six, Juwayria was taken captive among the captives of Banu Mustaliq, and her husband Musafi bin Safwan al-Mustaliqi was killed, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her.
