A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have married a woman from the Ansar."The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Have you looked at her? For there is something in the eyes of the Ansar."The man replied, "I have looked at her."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "For how much did you marry her?"He answered, "For four uqiyyahs."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "For four uqiyyahs? It is as though you people carve silver out of the side of this mountain. We have nothing to give you, but perhaps we will send you on an expedition from which you may gain something."So he dispatched an expedition to Banu Abs and sent that man among them.
جاء رجل إلى النبي فقال: إني تزوجت امرأة من الأنصار. فقال له النبي ﷺ: هل نظرت إليها؟ فإن في عيون الأنصار شيئا قال: قد نظرت إليها. قال: على كم تزوجتها؟ قال: على أربع أواق فقال له النبي ﷺ: على أربع أواق، كأنما تنحتون الفضة من عرض هذا الجبل، ما عندنا ما نعطيك، ولكن عسى أن نبعثك في بعث تصيب منه قال: فبعث بعثا إلى بني عبس. بعث ذلك الرجل فيهم.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Marriage (75:1424), from Yahya bin Main, who said, Marwan bin Muawiya Fazari narrated to us, who said, Yazid bin Kaysan narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. It contains the dislike of excessive dowry relative to the husband's circumstances.
