Abdullah bin Zubayr stood up in Mecca and said, "There are people whose hearts Allah has blinded just as He has blinded their eyes, who give legal opinions permitting temporary marriage." He was alluding to a particular man.The man called out to him and said, "You are a coarse and rough fellow. By my life, temporary marriage was practiced during the time of the leader of the pious," meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Ibn Zubayr said to him, "Then try it yourself. By Allah, if you do, I will stone you with your own stones."Ibn Shihab said, Khalid bin Muhajir bin Sayf Allah informed me that while he was sitting with a man, someone asked the man for a ruling about temporary marriage, and the man instructed him to do it.Ibn Abu Amra al-Ansari said to him, "Hold on!"The man replied, "What is the matter? By Allah, it was practiced in the time of the leader of the pious."Ibn Abu Amra said, "It was a concession in the early days of Islam for those compelled by necessity, like carrion, blood, and pork. Then Allah established the religion firmly and forbade it."
أن عبد الله بن الزبير قام بمكة فقال: إن ناسا أعمى الله قلوبهم كما أعمى أبصارهم يفتون بالمتعة- يعرض برجل- فناداه فقال: إنك لجلف جاف، فلعمري لقد كانت المتعة تفعل على عهد إمام المتقين ( يريد رسول الله ﷺ) فقال له ابن الزبير: فجرب بنفسك، فوالله لئن فعلتها لأرجمنك بأحجارك. قال ابن شهاب: فأخبرني خالد بن المهاجر بن سيف الله، أنه بينما هو جالس عند رجل. فاستفتاه في المتعة فأمره بها. فقال له ابن أبي عمرة الأنصاري: مهلا! قال: ما هي؟ والله لقد فعلت في عهد إمام المتقين. قال ابن أبي عمرة: إنها كانت رخصة في أول الإسلام لمن اضطر إليها كالميتة والدم ولحم الخنزير، ثم أحكم الله الدين ونهى عنها.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Marriage (27:1406), from Harmala bin Yahya, who said, Ibn Wahb told us, Yunus told me, Ibn Shihab said, Urwa bin Zubayr told me, and he mentioned it.
