Reported by Abu Dawud (2133), Tirmidhi (1141), Nasai (3942), Ibn Majah (1969), and Ibn Jarud (722), and graded sahih by Ibn Hibban (4207) and Hakim (2/186), all of them through the hadith of Hammam bin Yahya, from Qatada, from Nadr bin Anas, from Bashir bin Nuhayk, from Abu Hurairah, who related it.Tirmidhi said, "Only Hammam bin Yahya connected this hadith through Qatada with a full chain. Hisham Dastawai narrated it from Qatada." He said, "It used to be said that we do not know this hadith as a raised report except through the hadith of Hammam, and Hammam is trustworthy and a reliable memorizer," meaning that his additional detail is accepted.Hakim said, "It is sahih according to the standard of the two shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim)."I say, Hammam bin Yahya being the sole transmitter of this does not weaken it, for he is trustworthy and a reliable memorizer, as Tirmidhi said. Ibn Adi said, "His hadiths are sound," and for this reason a group of scholars graded it sahih, among them those already mentioned, and also Ibn Daqiq Eid, Abdul-Haqq Ashbili, and others.On this subject it is also reported from Anas bin Malik, but that version is not sahih.As for his saying, "he inclines toward one of them over the other," this refers to the rights involved in companionship, such as food, drink, and clothing, not the inclination of the heart, for hearts are not within one's control. The Prophet ﷺ used to treat his wives equally in the division of his time and would say, "O Allah, this is my division in what I control, so do not hold me accountable for what I do not control." However, the sound view is that this report is mursal, as will follow.
