Saad bin Abu Waqqas and Abd bin Zama disputed over a boy.Saad said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ, this is the son of my brother Utba bin Abu Waqqas. He entrusted to me that this boy is his son. Look at the resemblance."Abd bin Zama said, "This is my brother, Messenger of Allah. He was born on my father's bed from his slave-girl."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the boy and saw a clear resemblance to Utba. He said, "He is yours, Abd bin Zama. The child belongs to the bed, and the adulterer gets the stone. And you, Sawda bint Zama, veil yourself from him."So she never saw him after that.In another narration there is an addition, "He is your brother, Abd."
اختصم سعد بن أبي وقاص وعبد بن زمعة في غلام فقال سعد: هذا يا رسول الله ﷺ ابن أخي عتبة بن أبي وقاص عهد إلي أنه ابنه. انظر إلى شبهه، وقال عبد بن زمعة: هذا أخي يا رسول الله ولد على فراش أبي من وليدته. فنظر رسول الله ﷺ إلى شبهه فرأى شبها بينا بعتبة فقال: هو لك يا عبد بن زمعة، الولد للفراش، وللعاهر الحجر واحتجبي منه يا سودة بنت زمعة فلم تره قط، وفي رواية زيادة: هو أخوك يا عبد.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Judgments (22), from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he related it.Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sales (2218) and Muslim in the Book of Suckling (1457), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab with his chain, similarly. The addition is found in Abu Dawud (2273) with a sahih chain.This Utba died a disbeliever. He is the one who broke the Prophet's ﷺ front tooth on the day of Uhud, so the Prophet ﷺ invoked against him that the year would not pass until he died a disbeliever. And indeed the year did not pass over him before he died a disbeliever.Similar in meaning is what was narrated from Abdullah bin Zubayr, who said, Zama had a slave girl with whom he used to have relations, and he suspected that another man was also having relations with her. She gave birth to a child resembling the one he suspected, and Zama died while she was pregnant. Sawda mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The child belongs to the bed, so veil yourself from him, O Sawda, for he is not your brother."Nasai narrated it (3485) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim, Jareer informed us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Yusuf bin Zubayr, a freedman of theirs, from Abdullah bin Zubayr, and he related it.As for Yusuf bin Zubayr, the Makki, Madani, Asadi, freedman of the family of Zubayr, Ibn Jareer said, "He is unknown, not to be relied upon." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, otherwise his hadith is weak. I did not find any corroboration for him.
