A woman offered herself in marriage to the Prophet ﷺ, and a man said to him, "Messenger of Allah, marry her to me."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What do you have?"The man replied, "I have nothing."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and look for something, even if it be a ring of iron."He went and then returned, saying, "By Allah, I found nothing, not even a ring of iron, but here is my lower garment, half of it can be hers."Sahl said, He had no upper garment. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What would she do with your lower garment? If you wore it, she would have nothing of it on her, and if she wore it, you would have nothing of it on you."The man sat down, and after sitting for a long while he got up. The Prophet ﷺ saw him and called him, or had him called, and asked him, "How much of the Quran do you know?"He said, "I know such and such surah, and such and such surah," listing them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have given her to you in marriage for what you have of the Quran."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5121), and Muslim in the Book of Marriage (1425), via Abu Hazim, from Sahl bin Saad, who related it. The wording given is that of Bukhari.
