The Prophet ﷺ proposed marriage to Umm Hani bint Abu Talib. She replied, "Messenger of Allah, I have grown old and I have children to care for."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of women who have ridden camels are the women of Quraysh. They are the most affectionate toward a child in his early years."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2527:201) via Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Mamar informed us, from Zuhri, from Ibn Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, who related it. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Prophets (3434) as a suspended narration through another route from Ibn Shihab with his chain, in similar wording, but it does not meet the criteria of Bukhari, and for that reason I did not say of it, "sahih."As for what has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to a woman of his people called Sawda, who had children, having five or six young children from a husband of hers who had died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "What keeps you from me?" She said, "By Allah, O Prophet of Allah, nothing keeps me from you, for you are the dearest of creation to me, but I would spare you the sight of these children whimpering by your head morning and evening." He said, "Is there anything else that keeps you from me?" She said, "No, by Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "May Allah have mercy on you. The best of women who ever rode on the backs of camels are the righteous women of Quraysh, the most tender toward a child in his infancy, and the most attentive to a husband in what her hand possesses."This is a mistake. Ahmad narrated it (2923), as did Abu Yaala (2686) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (12/248–249), all of them through the hadith of Abdul-Hameed, who said, Shahr bin Hawshab narrated to us, who said, Abdullah bin Abbas narrated to me, and he related it.This is a mistake, because the story actually happened to Umm Hani, and Sawda is not the daughter of Zama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, she is a different woman entirely. In the chain of transmission is Shahr bin Hawshab, concerning whom there is well known criticism, and his reports are not accepted when they contradict others.
