Barirah's husband was a black slave named Mughith. The narrator said, "I used to see him following her through the streets of Medina, weeping with tears streaming down his cheeks."The Prophet ﷺ issued four rulings concerning her case. Her former owners had stipulated that they retain the right of patronage (wala) over her, but the Prophet ﷺ ruled, "The right of patronage belongs to the one who frees the slave."He gave her the choice regarding her marriage, and she chose to leave her husband. He then instructed her to observe the waiting period. She was given some charity, and she sent a portion of it as a gift to Ayesha. When this was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "It is charity for her and a gift to us."
Ahmad (2542), Tabarani (11826), and Bayhaqi (7/221–222) all narrated it from the hadith of Hammam, who said, Qatada informed us, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih, and it appears from this same route in an abridged form in Sahih Bukhari (5280), with Ibn Abbas saying, "I saw him as a slave" meaning the husband of Barira.
