Abu Hind cupped the Prophet ﷺ on the crown of his head, and the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Children of Bayadah, give Abu Hind your daughters in marriage and take wives from his family." He also said, "If there is any good in the remedies you use for treatment, it is in cupping."In another narration, it states that he was a cupper.
Abu Dawud (2102) narrated it from Abdul-Wahid bin Ghiyath, who said, Hammad narrated to us, who said, Muhammad bin Amr narrated to us, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Daraqutni (3/300-301), Ibn Hibban (4067), Hakim (2/164), and Bayhaqi (7/136) also narrated it, all of them through the route of Muhammad bin Amr, with the same chain. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of Muslim." I say, it is as he said, except that Muhammad bin Amr, who is Ibn Alqama Laythi, even though he is among the narrators relied upon in the Sahih, his hadith is hasan. In the report of Zuhri, where the chain is missing a link, he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Banu Bayada to marry Abu Hind to a woman from among them. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall we marry our daughters to our freed slaves?" So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed, "Indeed, We created you from a male and a female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" [Hujurat 49:13].Abu Dawud narrated it in his Marasil (218) from Amr bin Uthman and Kathir bin Ubayd, who both said, Baqiyya narrated to us, who said, Zubaydi narrated to me, from Zuhri, and he mentioned it. It has also been narrated as connected, but that is not valid. Abu Dawud said, "Part of it has been narrated with a connected chain, and it is daif." I say, Daraqutni (3/300) narrated it as connected, mentioning Urwa, from Ayesha. Abu Hatim said in Ilal (1/409), "This hadith is baseless."In this hadith there is evidence for those who say that compatibility in marriage is a matter of religion alone and nothing else. For Abu Hind the cupper, whose name was Abdullah, and it is also said Yasar, and it is also said Salim, was a freed slave of Banu Bayada and not one of them. He was the one who used to cup the Prophet ﷺ, so he ordered them to marry, meaning, to their daughters. And his statement, "Give women to him in marriage," means, ask him for his daughters in marriage.Zaynab bint Jahsh was from Banu Assad bin Khuzayma, and her mother was the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She was married to Zayd bin Haritha, who was one of the freed slaves, until he divorced her, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then married her. Dubaa bint Zubayr bin Abdul-Muttalib was the wife of Miqdad bin Aswad, who was an ally of Quraysh. Abu Huzaifa bin Utba adopted Salim, his freed slave, and married him to his brother's daughter. And the sister of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf was married to Bilal. All of this shows that marrying someone who is not compatible in status is not forbidden if the guardian consents to it and the woman is of sound judgment. See Sharh al-Sunnah (11/9).Ibn Munzir said, "The scholars differed concerning the matter of marital compatibility. One group said that compatibility is a matter of religion, and that all Muslims are compatible with one another. This is what Malik bin Anas said." Ibn Qasim said, "I asked Malik about a freed slave marrying among the Arabs, and he said, 'There is no harm in that. Do you not see what is in the Book of Allah, "O mankind, indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" [Hujurat 49:13]?'"He said, and Malik said, "All Muslims are compatible with one another, because of the statement of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the revelation, "Indeed, We created you from a male and a female" [Hujurat 49:13]." It was mentioned that Malik said, "Among what makes this clear is that Abu Huzaifa bin Utba bin Rabia married Salim to Fatimah bint Walid bin Utba bin Rabia, and no one objected to that. And among what also makes this clear is that Khabab al-Ansari was married to a woman from Quraysh, from Banu Hashim, which refutes those who say that Arabs may not marry into Quraysh. I have not seen anyone among the people of jurisprudence and virtue, nor have I heard, that anyone objected to Arabs marrying into Quraysh, or to freed slaves marrying into the Arabs and Quraysh, so long as he is her equal in his condition." End of quote. See Awsat (8/221).An important note. It is narrated that a man came to Hasan and said, "I have a daughter whom I love, and more than one man has proposed to her. Whom do you advise me to marry her to?" He said, "Marry her to a man who fears Allah, for if he loves her he will honor her, and if he dislikes her he will not wrong her." See for more, Minna Kubra (6/132).Islam is a religion of love and peace, calling to moderation and balance, and Muslims are brothers to one another. The condition of compatibility, beyond righteousness and piety, contradicts this principle and calls to racism within Islam, from which Islam is innocent. Among the distinguishing features of Islam is that it does not differentiate between Arab and non-Arab, or master and servant, for all are from Adam, and Adam is from dust.
