Ibn Abbas asked me, "Have you married?"I replied, "No."He said, "Then marry, for the best of this nation are those with the most wives."
قال لي ابن عباس: هل تزوجت؟ قلت: لا، قال: فتزوج، فإن خير هذه الأمة أكثرها نساء.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5069) from Ali bin Hakam Ansari, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Raqaba (he is Ibn Musqila Abdi), from Talha Yami, from Saeed bin Jubayr, who said, Ibn Abbas said to me, and he related it. Ibn Abbas said this to him before he had grown a beard, and he was not intending to marry that day.As for Ibn Abbas's saying, "The best of this nation are those with the most wives," he perhaps meant by it the Prophet ﷺ, for he had more wives than anyone else, since it is not permissible for anyone besides him to marry more than four. As for you, Ibn Jubayr, you had not married even one woman. This contains an encouragement to marry.
