I was walking with Abdullah at Mina when Uthman met him, so he stopped to speak with him.Uthman said to him, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, shall we not marry you to a young girl who might remind you of some of your bygone days?"Abdullah replied, "If you say that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ indeed said to us, 'Young men, whoever among you can afford marriage should marry, for it lowers the gaze and guards the private parts. And whoever cannot should fast, for fasting is a shield for him.'"
كنت أمشي مع عبد الله بمنى، فلقيه عثمان، فقام معه يحدثه. فقال له عثمان: يا أبا عبد الرحمن، ألا نزوجك جارية شابة لعلها تذكرك بعض ما مضى من زمانك. قال: فقال عبد الله: لئن قلت ذاك، لقد قال لنا رسول الله ﷺ: يا معشر الشباب، من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج، فإنه أغض للبصر، وأحصن للفرج، ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم، فإنه له وجاء.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5065) via Hafs bin Ghiyath, and Muslim in the Book of Marriage (1:1400) via Abu Muawiya, both of them from Amash, who said, "Ibrahim (that is, Nakhai) told me," from Alqama, and he mentioned it. The wording given is Muslim's.In another version of his, transmitted via Jareer from Amash, from Umara bin Umayr, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid, who said, "My uncle Alqama and Aswad and I went in to see Abdullah bin Masud." He said, "I was a young man at that time," and he mentioned a hadith that I think he narrated for my sake. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ" and the rest is like the hadith of Abu Muawiya. He added, "So it was not long before I got married."The word "baah" means intercourse. Its root meaning is a place, the dwelling to which a person retreats, and marriage was named after it because when a man marries a woman, he provides her with a home. Sharh al-Sunnah (4/9).
