I went in to see Ayesha and said, "I was a slave of Utbah bin Abu Lahab. He died, and his sons inherited me. They sold me to Ibn Abu Amr, who freed me, but the sons of Utbah stipulated that the right of patronage would remain theirs."Ayesha said, "Barirah came in to see me while she was a mukatabah, and she said, 'Buy me and free me.'I said, 'Yes.'She said, 'But they will not sell me unless they stipulate that my right of patronage stays with them.'I said, 'I have no need of that.'The Prophet ﷺ heard of this, or it reached him, and he mentioned it to me. I told him what I had said to her, and he said, 'Buy her and free her, and let them stipulate whatever they wish.'"So Ayesha bought her and freed her, and her former owners stipulated the right of patronage. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The right of patronage belongs to whoever frees the slave, even if they stipulate a hundred conditions."
