One day the Prophet ﷺ was sitting out in the open among the people when a man came to him and asked him a question. The narrator then mentioned the hadith in its entirety. In it, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This was Jibreel. He came to teach the people their religion."
كان النبي ﷺ بارزا يوما للناس، فأتاه رجل فقال فذكر الحديث بطوله. وفيه قال النبي ﷺ: هذا جبريل جاء يعلم الناس دينهم.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Faith (50), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (9), both from the hadith of Ismail bin Ibrahim bin Ulayyah, from Abu Hayan Taymi, from Abu Zura, from Abu Hurairah, and he related the hadith in full. See the beginning of the Book of Faith. The hadith did not mention the form of Jibreel, but it appears that he came in the form described by Umar bin Khattab in the hadith that follows.
